I love Pedernales country. It is rugged and prickly and not a bit tamed. But if you train your eye towards its peculiar wilds, a handsome timelessness becomes visible. I have spent much time there at the falls - mapping the topography and immersing myself in its visual language. The ancient fossiliferous limestone evoking images of primitive architecture or a time when the moon had water. I am personally drawn to these natural land formations as they epitomize what I love about Central Texas and the Hill Country.

Venus of Pedernales also draws influence from the landscapes there, where indigenous people have sought shelter and resources for millennia. Produced in late summer 2024, this stoneware sculpture is a synthesis of recurring motifs in my work. Sometimes a figure emerges at certain perspectives - dancing and curving in space, while other angles offer an abstracted view of her standing in contrapposto. 19H x 16W x 12D inches.
